Conduct a Road Safety Review in Heslington

We the undersigned petition the council to lead a formal road safety assessment of Main Street, Heslington between Home Farm and Sherburn House.

This petition is raised by the Parish Council on behalf of the worried residents of Heslington to request an urgent road safety review for our village’s main highway.

Main Street is the primary route through the village, lined with family homes, local shops, and used daily by children walking to and from school. It has been reported to the Parish Council that there has been a marked increase in vehicles — including cars and agricultural vehicles — travelling at unsafe speeds along this road, with a vehicle recently losing control and colliding with a road sign close to a residential property. There is no speed camera in Heslington so data is not readily available. Where residents have been collecting their own data this will be attached when the petition is submitted to the council. These incidents were also reported to the police at a recent community drop-in.

We believe the safety of our children and residents is at risk. Statistics show that speeding is a major cause of road-related injuries and fatalities. According to the Department for Transport, speeding was a contributory factor in 29% of fatal crashes in the UK during recent years. Heslington should not be another statistic.
