Clifford’s Tower Visitor Centre Update

Decision Maker: Executive

Decision status: Decision Made

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

Purpose of Report: To consider the council’s response to the public announcement by English Heritage to not proceed with the Visitor Centre element of the proposals for Clifford’s Tower.

The report will ask the Executive to consider a recommendation to withdraw the offer of a long leasehold disposal of the land around Clifford’s Tower which has previously been agreed by Executive in order to allow English heritage to develop a Visitor Centre. This land is no longer required following the public announcement by English Heritage of the cancellation of this element of the scheme.

The reason for the urgency is to clarify City of York Council’s position following English Heritage’s recent announcement.

Decision:

Resolved:  (i)      That the offer of a long lease for the land requested by English Heritage for the construction of a Clifford’s Tower visitor centre (shaded light blue on the plan at Annex 1) be retracted.

(ii)      That the offer of a two year lease for the adjacent land for the associated public piazza proposed as part of the visitor centre project (shaded orange on the plan at Annex 1) be retracted.

Reason:     To reflect the decision of English Heritage not to proceed with the visitor centre.
