Policing in York

We the undersigned petition the council to use all best endeavours either directly through appropriate departments or via The Safer York Partnership to direct North Yorkshire Police to return to a system of effective Neighbourhood Policing in York with regular, visible beat patrols.

The situation in many parts of York continues to see ASB and petty crime increase with perpetrators clearly emboldened by the lack of any visible police presence on their streets, despite PR exercises and media releases by North Yorkshire Police the deteriorating situation is clear for residents to see.

Neighbourhood Policing should be about proactive policing with dedicated officers allocated to their ‘beats’ walking those beats getting to know their areas and the people within their areas gathering knowledge and providing reassurance.

All the people of York receive in return for paying an ever increasing Police Precept is ‘fire brigade’ policing when, if North Yorkshire Police do turn up is attendance after an incident has occurred with no attempt to provide the public what they want which is proactive, preventative policing.

The Safer York Partnership has a remit for ‘safer communities’ and via that remit needs to robustly highlight the failure of North Yorkshire Police in York to provide ‘safer communities’.
