Review and introduce two-way cycling in one-way streets

We the undersigned petition the council to allowing cyclists to ride two-way in one-way streets to make cycling in York and its villages more convenient by opening up the street network, providing short-cuts, make cycling safer by offering alternatives to busy roads, and stop people riding on the pavement. City of York Council should review all its one-way streets, with the aim of progressively converting them either to two-way use (particularly for one-way systems on more major roads), or permitting contra-flow cycling (e.g. on narrower streets), unless it can be demonstrated that there are overriding hazards affecting cyclists.

There are a variety of options available for introducing two-way cycling facilities in one-way streets, ranging from simple signage to minor highways works, e,g, new traffic islands. The most appropriate treatment will depend upon a variety of attributes including available carriageway width, traffic volume and mean vehicle speed. A study should be commissioned by the Council to assess the feasibility of implementing two-way cycling within the city's one-way street network.
