The Acaster Malbis Knowles Educational Foundation was set up in 1603 to provide financial assistance towards the educational needs of children and young persons in the “Ancient Parish of Acaster Malbis” which in actual fact covers Acaster Malbis and the central area of the village of Naburn.

Awards are decided by a board of 8 trustees, 2 of which are representatives of City of York Council and who are elected every four years.

The Knowles Educational Foundation is governed by a  Scheme made on 21 October 1930 by the then Board of Education under the Charitable Trusts Acts. It administers the educational endowment founded by the will of John Knowles dated 10 August 1603.

The Scheme directs that the income of the Foundation shall be applied:

a)   In assisting pupils with the cost of school trips, educational holidays abroad, music and swimming lessons

b)   In assisting young people in need of financial assistance to learn skilled trades by means of apprenticeship

c)   In helping provide financial assistance towards university/further education expenses in the form of help towards travel, cost of books, materials and, in some cases, accommodation.

Those who benefit must be resident in the “Ancient Parish of Acaster Malbis” which is the modern parish of Acaster Malbis and the central part of the village of Naburn. The trustees will consider applications for grants on these or other proper grounds.
