The project was initiated in 2025 and is focused on renewal of the existing traffic signal control infrastructure as the crossing is currently among the worst condition traffic signal sites across CYC assets.

The proposed works, alongside Stakeholder correspondence were presented to the Executive Member for Transport and Ward Councillors on 22/07/2026. They were supportive of the project and agreed that it can proceed under Chief Officer Decision.

Ward Councillor and Stakeholder commentary regarding considerations for future improvements in the vicinity of the crossing are to be considered as part of a wider transport corridor project.

The project is currently intended for delivery in Autumn 2026 with an anticipated cost of £200k.

Proposed Works
The proposed design is a largely standard refurbishment of the existing traffic signal equipment at the crossing, with resurfacing in the vicinity of the crossing. The works proposed for the site are:

• Refurbishment of the traffic signal equipment and ducting networks to:
o Ensure traffic signal standards are met.
o Use LED and ELV technology traffic signals
o Include Puffin style near side red / green man displays
o Provide above ground vehicle and pedestrian detection
o Create a maintainable ducting network
o Link to communications network to ensure reliable fault monitoring and UTC connectivity
• Review existing tactile paving and amend so they are brought up to standard wherever possible.
• Undertake a review of the island width to see if it can be enlarged to better meet the need of pedestrians without impacting on carriageway users significantly.
• Review of the requirement for guardrailing on the pedestrian island
• Relocate the traffic signal controller and provide a new electrical supply
• Resurfacing of the approaches to the crossing.
• Review and update road marking to standard including reviewing of on carriageway cycle lanes in the direct area of the crossing – this is to include “floating” zigzags.

Taking these steps ensures the ongoing operational function of the crossing, reducing the risk of asset failure and providing benefits with regards reduced energy consumption of the equipment.

Do nothing. Rejected due to the life-expired nature of the equipment in this section which is now difficult and costly to maintain and needs to be refurbished. Assets at the site are in excess of 25 years old and would require emergency replacement if they were to fail, incurring significant cost.
